The Office Restroom Situation
The restroom in our office is shared with the women on the same floor of the building, but recently, the condition of the women’s restroom has become absolutely awful, and my (female) boss has been frequently getting angry about it.
How bad is it? Well, some people do not flush after using the toilet. Others leave urine splattered all over the seat and floor. Some even leave traces of their explosive bowel movements on the toilet bowl. It is something I could never have imagined happening back in Japan.
When I was in Japan, every stall had a disinfectant spray, so most people would wipe the seat before sitting down. Honestly, though, the seats were already so clean that wiping was hardly necessary. Everyone naturally followed the principle of “Leave no trace behind.”
But in our office building’s restroom, I have no idea what went wrong. Are people just inconsiderate? Or are there actually people who do not even know how to use a flush toilet?
The toilets here are the automatic flushing type—they flush when you stand up, but you can also manually flush by pressing a button. Sure, I suppose it is possible that some people assume it flushed and just walk away. But compared to everything else happening in there, forgetting to flush is honestly the least of our problems.
Whenever someone in the office uses the restroom and comes back, they often report how disgusting it was. And even though there is no way to figure out who did it, people always end up having “Who’s the culprit?” discussions.
I have long since grown tired of how frequently the restroom gets dirty, and I am beyond exhausted with my boss blowing up about it and the office gossiping about who might be responsible.
I want to talk about more interesting things, but I am completely fed up with “gross restroom stories” being the hot topic. Seriously, how many episodes of this drama do we need before we find the culprit? It is never going to happen. The restroom stalls are like black boxes—there is no way we will ever figure out who is behind this mess.
Considering how much of a topic this has become in our office, I am sure other offices are dealing with the same thing. At this point, I bet everyone is secretly suspecting each other, thinking, “Could this person be the culprit?” It is basically turning into a real-life Among Us.
