January to March

2025-03-31

As the Japanese saying goes, “January runs away, February escapes, and March disappears.” And every year, I really do feel how fast time flies from January through March. The fact that a quarter of the year is already over always shocks me. These three months pass in the blink of an eye.

I’ve started thinking—this has to be some kind of trick, right? But maybe it is because the days are shorter in winter. We end up saying, “Wait, it’s night already?” so often that time just seems to speed up overall. It’s like a compounding effect—tiny moments that pile up into one big “Wait, it’s already April?”

And now, before I knew it, tomorrow is April.

By the way, at the end of March two years ago, I received my Canadian permanent residency. That means it has been exactly two years since that day.

You’d think I would be feeling celebratory, but in reality, I was sick in bed all day. Well, that’s life.

Up until two or three years ago, I used to have an annual “year-in-review” presentation with a friend (a tradition we had continued for as long as seven or eight years). But somehow, we stopped doing it.

One year, that friend went through a tough time—she broke up with her partner and had to shut down her business. Meanwhile, things in my life were going pretty smoothly. I think she just did not feel like revisiting everything in that moment, and so we skipped the tradition that year.

And once you skip something like that, it is hard to bring it back. We always say, “Let’s do it again sometime,” but it never happens.

It is kind of like those fading local festivals in rural towns—once they stop, it is hard to revive them. Traditions really only hold their value when they are kept alive continuously, without interruption.

Anyway, I wrote a lot, but what I really want to say is this:

Consistency is power.

I hope I can keep this blog going, slowly and steadily, for a long time.
